An excursion in the rain in Oberberg: cave, pool and fireplace under one roof

An excursion in the rain in Oberberg works from the Waldhotel Wiehl: the stalactite cave is around 8 °C in any weather, the indoor pool, sauna, restaurant and skittle alley are under one roof, and museums and swimming pools are 3 to 19 minutes away by car.

Still lake in the stalactite cave

The cave remains the plan even in the rain

The rain falls on the forest floor and not into the passages, so the tours run the same in sun and in rain.

The cave is not dry, though. The humidity is high, water drips in places, which is after all how stalactites form. Sturdy shoes and a warm jacket are part of the plan, and you leave the umbrella in the car. The cave is closed in winter.

A rainy day

A rainy day done right

  1. Morning: guided tour

The first tour starts on the hour and lasts around 45 minutes. You can reserve up to the day before; for today, please ask at the ticket desk.

  2. Warm up afterwards

It is usually cooler up top after the cave than you expect. Coffee, ice cream or a cocoa at the kiosk next to the ticket desk is welcome then.

  3. Afternoon: indoor pool or museum

Relax in the indoor pool or visit a museum nearby, more below and under Schloss Homburg and museums. If the weather clears, the wildlife park next door invites you for a stroll.

  4. Evening at Waldhotel

The restaurant is only a few steps away. Wet jackets stay in the car, and in the restaurant you sit dry.
